As the summer progresses…

As we grind away at the summer season, I’m glad Julie and I are able to get a few days away and go up north to my cousins cottage in Tupper Lake. The first day here all we seem to be able to do is take quick naps then find stuff where we can stay away from the heat of the summer with temperatures reaching into the 90’s.

The garden has been a challenge staying ahead of the heat as well as seed sowing and weeding. Most of the sowing for the summer season is completed except for maybe a last sowing of lettuce, arugula and some quick short season crops. I made the mistake of leaving my box of seeds outside one night where it got soaked with the one overnight rain that I didn’t expect. I went out to 2” of water in the box and every packet soaked. I was able to save some seeds but most were lost to the glue in the package letting loose to whatever was contained inside.

I’m running into a slight problem with no grass growth in the pastures due to the lack of rain which will have an effect on my late summer grazing and pasture allocation. The cow herd is getting smaller with the monthly trips to the butcher and this past month it seems that I have three butcher dates all within a 30 day stretch. Our usual personnel outflux is starting to happen as we get to the end of the season and folks decide where they will be spending their winter months. One more festival and our concert season will be over for the year.

Tomatoes are starting to ripen on the vines and peppers will soon be coming soon. Looking forward to to lots of crops coming into season with more carrots, arugula, lettuce, beans, beets and peas showing signs of ripening. Looking forward to to seeing everyone at market this week. Enjoy the summer season.
