I think the thing I like the most about farming is the diversity of what we do here and the challenge to end up with a superb product in the end. Such is the case with the cows recently. Our pastures stretch from one end of our property to the other and in moving the cows through the pastures, I get challenged with the best way to use all my recourses.
Three of my pastures border a large woodlot and when I get to that location, I like to take advantage of a process called “ silvopasture”. What that entails is running the cows through the wooded area. Silva is a Latin word for “pastura” or forest and woods. The cows enjoy it because of the change in forage and to be able to be in a shaded area and trees to rub on. This also keeps the vegetation down in the woods. I usually get three days of this type of grazing. I think this style of grazing also helps to build density of nutrients in the meats that we produce.
