Seed ordering time

As everyone is probably aware, this time of year is dedicated to going through catalogs looking at varieties of seeds and growing qualities of new and older seed varieties available. I have always been a bit of a grower that likes to try to have a lot of variety in what I grow in the garden. Usually with that approach, some things work out well and others don’t. I grow in less than an acre of land and space is a limited commodity so I’m planning on scaling down my experimenting and growing more tried and true veggies that have over performed in the past.

I do like to keep my attention to fine tuning my processes and actually going back to some of my old methods I’ve been using since first in the greenhouse business 45 years ago. I’m still going to be doing a bunch of direct sowing of seeds right in to the ground but quite a bit of what I grow is sowing into flats and transplanting and growing on as started plants. Being certified organic, we are required to start all our own seedlings so my past experience comes in handy. My compost pile is enjoying the winter weather where it is silently working in harmony with the worms breaking down the organic baleage and weeds and manure to create a dark and rich bedding that will be used to top all my growing beds.

We are still going to Fredonia Winter Market selling our proteins and storage veggies like potatoes, shallots and onions. Don’t forget the bone and chicken broths along with the soups and dips. I hope to see you some time soon at market!
