Succession planting

This time of year, most people are starting to wind down the garden and are glad to get what vegetables they can out of the garden. Here at Green Heron Growers we practice succession planting. What that is, is when a bed of something is done with its harvesting cycle, say lettuce or arugula, I turn right around and have something ready to go in to the bed to start a new cycle. It can be resowing to a different plant species or some transplants ready to be planted in to the bed. I will not replant with the same species but will go to some other type of vegetable that will break any growing cycle developed from the species before it.

This year I got a little behind on the cycle because of trying too many new things. I literally ran out of room and had to wait for a bed to finish up. One such new vegetable I tried this year is sweet potatoes. I sat in on a seminar at our organic conference last year and the topic was sweet potatoes. I am always up for something new and figured a way to make it work in my garden so that is my new vegetable for this season. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

The weather is starting to change so with that comes comfort food. One such item is stew beef. We will be offering 10% off on our stew beef packages. Crank up the crockpot and slow cook some stew beef.
